The 2019 general elections are the sixth in the nation since 1999, the year Nigeria returned to democratic rule and the first since the All Progressives Congress ousted the Peoples Democratic Party from power after it held sway for 16 years.

A total of 73 candidates are in the presidential race, according to INEC, including incumbent President, Muhammadu Buhari, and a former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who are the front line flag bearers.

The main contenders include incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari (All Progressives Congress, APC) and former vice-president, Atiku Abubakar (Peoples Democratic Party, PDP).

Others include Omoyele Sowore of the African Action Congress (AAC); Kingsley Moghalu of the Young Progressives Party (YPP); Sina Fagbenro-Byron of the KOWA Party; Fela Durotoye of the Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN) and Obadaiah Mailafia of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The National Assembly election has hundreds of candidates across 91 registered political parties jostling for the 109 available seats in the Senate and the 360 spots in the House of Representatives.

After an intriguing period of political drama and campaigning, heralded by defections and war of words, it is time for Nigerians to give their verdict.

In all, 84,004,084 million citizens are registered for the elections, the majority of that number with Permanent Voter Cards will vote in the 119,973 polling units spread across the 36 states and the nation’s capital Abuja.

The Presidential and National Assembly elections have been scheduled for February 23, while citizens will also vote to elect governors and members of state houses of assembly on March 9.

6.55pm: And INEC National Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu formally opens collation of presidential election results.

6.00pm: INEC is set to begin collation of Presidential Election results from al the 36 states of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory (FC), Abuja.

5.30pm: APC polled 15,976 while PDP got 10,705 in Asa local government of Kwara state.

5.00pm: President Muhammadu Buhari’s APC wins in eight out of nine local government areas in Kwara state.

4.45pm: Presidential Campaign Council of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has called for immediate arrest of Buba Galadima, chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

4.30pm: Buhari’s APC polled 216 ahead of 196 scored by Atiku’s PDP at polling unit 009 in Gwadabawa, Yola North local government area.

3.40pm: Senatorial election result from Ilorin east LGA, Kwara central, show that the APC polled 30014, Bukola Saraki’s PDP got 14654.

3.30pm: We can report that the PDP defeated the APC in the presidential election in Akwanga West, Nasarawa state, north-central Nigeria. The PDP polled 6,163, while the APC got 1,467 votes.

3.00pm: Nigeria’s electoral umpire, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has announced that it would open its National Collation Centre by 6 pm on Sunday for the final summation of presidential election results.

2: 45pm: Presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar, beat his main challenger, President Muhammadu Buhari, in the ward of the Deputy Governor of Kaduna state, northwest Nigeria, Barnabas Bantex.

According to the results announced by INEC, the former vice president polled 2,991 votes, while Buhari’s APC got 1,443.

2.30pm: Deputy Governor of Kaduna state, northwest Nigeria, Barnabas Bantex, lost his ward to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

1:06 pm: The Speaker of House of Representatives, Mr Yakubu Dogara, has lamented that the card reader rejected his fingerprint when he came out to cast his vote in Saturday’s election.

Addressing journalists at Gwaramgah Primary School polling centre in his Gwallagah ward of Bogoro Local Government Area of Bauchi State, Dogara observed that although the election process was smooth, malfunctioning card readers could frustrate the process across the country.

10: 39 am: Soldiers from the Nigerian Army have taken over the security of the busy Benin/Auchi highway in Edo to safeguard the conduct of the ongoing general elections, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The Benin-Auchi expressway which links the Southern part of the country to the Northern part through Okene in Kogi State has been heavily barricaded with armed soldiers strategically positioned to diffuse any alternative plans to disorgnise the exercise.
